Fillings with Local Anesthetic

As part of your child’s restorative visit a local anesthetic may have been used.  If so, you may expect the area treated to remain “numb/sleeping” for 2-3 hours after leaving the office.

PLEASE be aware, your child could hurt him/herself by unconsciously doing any of the following:

  •               Sucking on tongue or lip.
  •               Biting/chewing tongue, lip or inside of cheek.
  •               Scratching cheek, lip or face with fingernails.

Monitoring your child closely following the appointment is important.  Reminding your child that the area is numb and not to suck, lick, chew  or even touch their lips, tongue, face or cheek.  The feeling will go away shortly.

Ideally your child will wait to eat any meals or snack until feeling has returned.  It would be very easy for them to chew their lips, tongue or cheek.  Please choose a softer diet if your child is in need of a snack soon after the appointment.

Any questions or concerns do not hesitate to contact the office.
